PNR nuber
PNR stands for ‘Passenger Name Record’ which is a 10 digit number generated at the time of train ticket booking through the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation. It holds a variety of information regarding the booking status such as whether or not the ticket has been confirmed or It is under a waiting list. Apart from other basic information such as the arrival and departure of the train, PNR number also consists of all the details of the coach and the seat number of the passengers.
What does the PNR number tell you?
The PNR number is one of the most important aspects of a railway ticket since it contains a lot of information. The PNR number can give you several pieces of information including-
- Details of the passenger such as the name, age, gender and berth preference
- Details of the ticket viz the train no., date of departure, name of the station of departure and arrival, class, berth number and the quota of reservation
- Payment details such as transaction ID, mode and amount of payment
The first three digits of the PNR number is fixed according to the zone with respect to the station of departure. However, the last seven digits are generated randomly and do not represent any information about the ticket. It only provides a unique identity to the PNR number which can be used to check various details of the passenger and the ticket.
How does PNR work?
The Centre for Railway Information System controls the database for Indian railway where all the information about the passenger is stored. The system generates this 10 digit PNR number whenever an individual books a ticket for the Indian Railways on any website, be it a private website or at the official railway website. Every PNR number can have a maximum of 6 passengers.
Checking PNR status on your Mobile:-
There are various ways by which you can check train live PNR status online of your ticket. Several online portals have been created as well as mobile applications which can be used for the enquiry of any PNR status. You can also visit the official website of IRCTC for the Indian Railways to check the status of your PNR number.
- By using the Indian Railways Website
if you want to check the PNR status of your ticket you can visit the official website of Indian Railways, www.indianrail.gov.in. Once you open the website you will find a box on the main page of the website where you can enter the PNR number. The PNR number can be found on the top left corner of your ticket. Click on the submit button after entering your PNR number. Once the information is loaded all the details will be displayed on the screen. It will also tell you whether the chart has been prepared or not.
- By visiting the IRCTC website
You can visit the website of IRCTC which is the official partner of Indian Railways. If you have booked your train tickets through the IRCTC website new simply need to login to the website and click on the booked ticket history. Then you can select your e-ticket and click on the get PNR status. You will receive complete information regarding your ticket on your mobile screen.

If you do not have access to the internet you can also check the PNR status of your ticket by dialling the official enquiry number of Indian Railways-139.
- By SMS
You can check PNR status on your mobile simply by sending an SMS. Type PNR, give a space and then enter the 10 digit PNR number mention on the top left corner of your train ticket. You need to send this message to 139.
The validity of PNR number
The PNR number lasts for a minimum period of 9 months. This is because the TDR can take a maximum period of 9 months. However, it is then removed from the database after the stipulated period of 9 months is over.
