  • Keep the sessions short, but frequent.
  • Only train when you and your dog alert.
  • Never issue commands you cannot enforce.
  • End each session on a positive note.

Learning how to interpret your dog’s body language will help in the training process. His body position, facial expression and tail movements all give clues about his mood.

Socialization

The goal is to teach him to be comfortable with a variety of people, places, situations, sounds, and other pets.

Start by exposing your dog to a wide variety of people, including men, women, children, babies, and senior citizens. Your dog should encounter people using or holding different objects, such as someone riding a bike, skateboarding, holding an umbrella, or pushing a stroller.

Take your dog to different places, such as the park, and homes of family or friends. Dog parks are a great place to meet different dogs: bigger ones, smaller ones, older ones, and younger ones.

Remember that socialization is an ongoing process. It is key to having a stable and confident dog. A well-socialized dog is able to handle new experiences more easily and has fewer fears.

Indoor Training

As soon as you bring a new dog into your life and into your home, you need to teach him the basics of indoor living. House breaking, crate training, and paper training are all easy to teach.

House breaking is making sure your dog never goes to the bathroom inside the house. First designate a toilet area outside. Then, set up a consistent feeding and bathroom schedule. Your constant supervision is needed so that you can get him to the right spot at the right time.

Crate training provides several benefits to both you and your dog. It provides a safe haven for your dog, aids in housetraining, and prevents unwanted behaviors in the home.

With paper training, you train your dog to eliminate on newspaper or other absorbent product. Some owners find it necessary because it is not always feasible to bring their dog outside when nature calls. These owners may live in a high-rise apartment building or be away from home for extended periods.

Basic Commands

Dogs respond best to short, clear commands, given with obvious hand signals. Avoid constantly repeating a command, since this will confuse your dog. Attract your dog’s attention by speaking its name, then give your command.

Your tone of voice and facial expressions are important. Smile when you are pleased. Scowl at the dog when you are not.
