To earn the name of a legend in the biking fraternity, it takes a number of model generations. The S1000 RR was BMW’s first four-cylinder motorcycle, and given that BMW is known for making boxer-twins, the S1000 RR was a bit different, but still went on to win over many hearts in the year 2010. The S1000 RR brought with it a host of electronics and power in the litre-class superbike segment. The 2019 S1000 RR brings with it a whole new persona.
Packed neatly within the frame is a 999cc, four-cylinder engine that produces 204bhp and 113Nm of torque. The motor is water-cooled and comes paired to a 6-speed manual transmission. The BMW S1000 RR is BSVI-compliant.
The new S1000 RR looks a whole lot different from its predecessor. It looks sportier, leaner and meaner. In fact, it could be mistaken for being a Japanese sports bike. The sleek full LED headlamps look great with a huge ram-air intake in the middle. The side fairing looks sharp with those gills in it. The tank is muscular and the tail section sweeps upwards, while the short exhaust adds to its sporty appeal. At the rear, a conventional tail lamp is absent, and instead, gets integrated in the indicators, which is pretty cool. The instrument cluster is a 6.5-inch TFT display and has four types of display modes. It can be controlled with the help of BMW’s rotary scroller on the left-hand side. It features a clock, gear position indicator, tachometer, speedometer, odometer and a trip meter. In terms of dimensions, the S1000 RR is 2056mm in length, 826mm in width and 1138mm in height. The engine is all-new, and features BMW’s Shiftcam variable camshaft control tech that allows for a better mid-range. The top-end performance is strong. This bike also comes with a bi-directional quickshifter which works pretty well. It isn’t particularly as smooth as a Japanese in-line four, as vibrations can be felt. The throttle is extremely responsive and super smooth. The bike can reach a top speed of 300kph. At 197kgs, the bike’s weight is manageable. The ground clearance, on the other hand, is 120mm, while the bike has a wheelbase of 1423mm and a seat height of 820mm.
The BMW S1000 RR has a fuel tank capacity of 16.5 litres. In terms of mileage, the bike is capable of returning 17kmpl by ARAI, in BSIV guise.
The clip-on handlebars are nice and wide, but the seating position is very committed, like on most superbikes, so you’re going to have to crouch forward whether you like it or not. The saddle is comfortable and offers decent support. The compact dimensions of the bike make you push it harder. The turn-in initially is quick, thanks to the carbon wheels. The Metzeler tyres are nice and sticky and provides ample amounts of grip. In Race mode, the suspension setup felt just right. You also get multi-stage adjustability for traction control, ABS, slide control systems, wheelie control and engine brake control. It also gets features like cruise control, heated grips, Bluetooth connectivity, GPS navigation and hill-start assist. At the front, the bike rides on upside-down forks, while the rear gets a WSBK aluminum swingarm. As far as the chassis is concerned, it is built around an aluminium twin-spar frame. The S1000 RR runs on 120/70 ZR-17 tyres at the front and 190/55 ZR-17 tyres at the rear. Retardation duties are taken care of by disc brakes at the front and at the rear.
The bike comes loaded with a slew of features like ABS, traction control, Bluetooth connectivity, hill-start assist, GPS navigation, cruise control, heated grips, carbon wheels, LED projector headlamp and LED tail lamps.
The BMW S1000 RR is available in two shades like Light White / Lupin Blue Metallic / Racing Red and Racing Red. Light White / Lupin Blue Metallic / Racing Red is certainly a colour combination that is bound to be a favourite among young riders.
